JOSEPH HAYES | PORT HURON TIMES HERALD |
The Port Huron Northern boys basketball team earned an impressive victory over the St. Clair basketball team Tuesday night.
The Huskies used a key second-quarter push to gain an advantage and continued to pull away in the second half for a 61-47 victory at Northern.
Carter Stoner led Port Huron Northern with 16 points and James Delong added 10 points. Ryan Zimmer paced St. Clair with 21 points.
"Coach wants me to come off the bench and shoot the ball," said Stoner, who had five second-quarter 3-pointers. "The first one got me confidence. When our team is in a flow we are connected together. We are really hard to beat."
Ryan McNeil added eight points and Josh Ward scored seven for Northern.
"We pride ourselves in having a lot of guys that can step up," Northern coach Brian Jamison said. "On different nights different guys have done it. I thought it was a good team win."
St. Clair led 15-11 entering the second quarter before Northern took a 38-22 advantage into the half and never looked back.
"I give Northern credit, they shot the ball from outside," St. Clair coach Mike Boullard said. "We weren't as sharp defensively. they shot lights-out in the second quarter and it took some wind out of us. We played hard but we didn't do what we needed to do in the half-court defense."
