DELONG TAKES BIG STEPS FORWARD FOR PHN
Joseph Hayes, Port Huron Times Herald USA TODAY NETWORK — MICHIGAN
He is one of the most versatile athletes in the area.
James DeLong has enjoyed quite the junior year athletically. The Port Huron Northern athlete starred on the football field for the Huskies in the fall, had a great basketball season for Northern this winter and will soon join the baseball team for the spring.
He finished his junior basketball season playing some of his best ball, and concluded the season being named the Times Herald Athlete of the Week.
“James has a tremendous all-around game,” Northern coach Brian Jamison said. “He can facilitate, score and has a really high basketball IQ. He played well all season, but really stepped it up down the stretch.”
DeLong was voted Athlete of the Week after scoring 25 points for Northern in a victory over Marysville. DeLong averaged 14.5 points for the Huskies, in addition to 5 rebounds and three assists each game.
“All of the coaches at Northern have been really good and they have prepared me well,” DeLong said. “We’ve had good practices and we’ve been working hard. Everyone around me played well and we grew as a team.
“I think I became more confident. We all got in the gym and got better. Everyone became a threat.”
In many ways, that is a testament to DeLong’s improvement. He paired with Carter Stoner on the outside and Braiden McGregor on the inside, to give the Huskies an overall, well-rounded attack.
“Mr. Jamison really got us ready with good practices,” DeLong said. “Everyone
wanted to win and we all worked hard. It was just fun being around friends and making memories with everyone on the team.”
Up next for DeLong is baseball season. But he will keep one eye on basketball along the way.
“I will still have two practices a week for my travel basketball team,” DeLong said. “School baseball comes first and when I’m not doing that I’ll practice basketball.”
